Author , historian and  storyteller Irene Smalls is the featured author for the 2010 Reading is Grand Kick-Off Event.  Participants will hear and share stories, create a craft and meet and greet the author.  This event will take place Tuesday, June 1, 2010, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Whitney Young Branch of the Chicago Public Library, 7901 S. King Drive, Chicago, IL 60619.

Irene Smalls is the author of several books for young children, including this year's Reading Is Grand featured titles My Nana and Me and My Pop Pop and Me.  Ms. Smalls, praised for her contributions to children's literature (her book Irene and the Big Fine Nickel was heralded as one of the "Most Outstanding Children's Books" by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC) will read from her work and discuss how sharing stories, both written and oral, fosters the development of literacy and life-long learning.
